If you’re a fan of my blog, you’ll notice that I rarely suggest books on bookbinding. After reading a ton of them (purchased & borrowed), I’ve learned to be a bit disappointed. They just can’t seem to present technical information in a way that is easy to understand and apply without being overly simple. For this reason, I was hesitant to pick up a copy of Handmade Books at Home by Chanel Ly.

Boy, was I wrong.

The book showed up at my house right when a wind storm knocked out the power. Internet-less and bored, I decided to turn on a battery powered LED light and crack it open. A few hours later, I was busy making the photo album you see on the cover. This is crazy, because there’s no way I would ever make a book using LED as a primary light source unless I was insanely inspired (and I was)! 😂

Chanel’s book reminded me of my own blog in how the information and photos are presented, but with a gorgeous cottagecore vibe. This beginner’s guide to binding is orderly, to-the-point and doesn’t waste time on stuff you don’t need to know when just getting started. The required materials, tools and instructions are very clear.

One of my favorite aspects is the skill progression. As you move through each project, new techniques and information are introduced to help improve the skills you’ve already learned. While this can make it hard to “jump ahead” to a different binding, it doesn’t completely prevent you from doing so. Just page back and pick up some of the tips she shares along the way.

Out of all the beginner books I’ve read, this one is by far the most visually inspiring. Chanel has a special way of making bookbinding feel comfortable via her cozy, neutral design palette, pops of color and perfectly textured materials. I think you’ll appreciate the way each project is individual, yet cohesive with the collection.

To sum things up…

Handmade Books at Home is perfect for:

  • beginner bookbinders looking for an introduction
  • someone who has access to starter tools & equipment
  • those who appreciate a balance of instruction & photography
  • any book artist seeking new inspiration
  • cottagecore aesthetic fans looking for DIY ideas
  • curious learners who appreciate extra tips, facts, etc.

Chanel Ly’s book is exactly what it claims to be: an introduction to making handmade books at home with carefully chosen projects that are fun, easy to create and will introduce new techniques while building on existing skills. Every book is gorgeous! I definitely recommend it.

If you can’t buy a copy, just ask your local library to carry it so more people can have access.
