Over the years, I’ve tried many different types of fabric for book cloth, so I have an opinion or two about what works for me and what doesn’t.
Long story short, I personally prefer cotton and linen for their strength and versatility. I also love how they feel and take to the backing I use (a Japanese rice paper called Unryu) when making my own book cloth at home.
What brand is best?
There are so many different brands of cotton and linen cloth that I’m nervous to recommend any, but I suppose I can’t write this post without sharing at least one.
The brand I’ve come back to time and again is called Rifle Paper Co. I’m particularly drawn to their use of deep, vibrant colors, high contrast and – on the opposite end – coordinating neutrals and pastels. I’m also a fan of nature, so their patterns inspire me.
Cost is a factor
The Rifle Paper Co brand is pretty expensive, but always consistent in quality. That said, there are many other brands producing quality cotton and linen fabrics that are just as good. When trying a new brand, always go for samples or small amounts at first. I’ve noticed some brands lack the pigment I find so appealing in cloth patterns, especially blues and oranges.
As you can see from this journal, the Rifle Paper Co fabric I chose has a lovely and consistent pigment. Their fabric is also quite soft to the touch, but remains durable under consistent use.
I hope that sharing my own preferences will help you decide to try something new and maybe even make your own book cloth at home. Good luck to you!
