💐📬 Happy Earth Day, my friends!

This year, I created several Weathergrams as part of an exchange project I helped organize for the Guild of Book Workers Northwest Chapter. It was a fun way to recycle scraps from my drawer while boosting communities with positivity. I created a total of 4 weathergrams for exchange and received 4 in return.

I love this one in the video about bees. How true is this?!

I wrote a tutorial on how to create your own Weathergrams for my blog if you want to make some yourself!

I really hope these thought provoking messages and positivity reach people at the right time. I believe we all need a bit more positivity in our lives right now!

Here’s hoping you’ll take a deep breath, close your eyes and face the sun today. Take care!

🌈 Last year, I was invited to bind a book for the Rag & Pulp bookbinding exhibition hosted by @uppercasemagazine
To be eligible, binders had to be nominated by a previous participant. My nomination was put forth by Holly D’Oench of @blackoakbindery and I am so thankful she thought of me!
The experience was excellent from start to finish, and our books were posted for exhibition on a website created by the publisher. If you would like to read more about how I designed the book, as well as links to the website, check my latest post (you can get to it from my profile).

Side note... I'm trying to value my own work more by criticizing it less, so here's my favorite element to this binding: the endbands! I sewed them using Londonderry thread on a single core. I chose a burnt orange color in the center as a call back to the beautiful color used on the first letter of each new chapter (see images for reference).

Side side note: my favorite part of this post is the Freya cameo 🥰 We miss her so much ❤️

Hope all is well in your world!

Yesterday, the most beautiful light went out much earlier than I could have ever imagined. Please let me tell you about Freya. It would mean so much to me.

Freya was our baby. We brought her home before lockdown in 2020 and she made us laugh when we were scared, stressed and anxious. She was absolutely adored and brought so much sunshine to our lives in the 4 short years we were blessed to love her.

She was a terrible “retriever” (keep away was her game), but the best snuggler. She loved car rides and didn’t walk well on a leash, but she could sit up so pretty you’d think she was doing palates. Her favorite toy in the whole world was a stuffed Lamby we purchased many times over so she wouldn’t know it was gone after the squeaker was chewed out. She had a big squeaky ball and loved to get our attention by interrupting a conversation with well-timed squeaks.

She wasn’t scared of anything… except very tall men and the occasional firework finale. Whenever I got stressed out or upset, she would “emotion police” me by jumping on my chest and giving kisses. I miss that.

Freya loved food. You could say she was “food obsessed,” but that’d be an understatement. We always fed her exactly what she was supposed to have, but hey I’m not gonna lie… every one of us snuck her little bits now and then.

That’s why we knew, when she stopped eating, something was terribly wrong. She had a rare issue called canine septic peritonitis where a perforation somewhere in her system caused fluid to leak into her abdominal cavity. There is no underlying cause. Our incredible vet, who cried alongside us, told us we didn’t do anything wrong. We did everything right. Sometimes, things happen, she said. There is no reason. There is no sense.

I’ve played the footage of the last two days over in my head looking for clues- there is nothing. Why couldn’t this kind soul live to see another snowfall, or go for another ride in the car? I can’t pretend to understand and I don’t know when I will feel normal again. I miss her every moment. I hope I’ll see her again someday when it’s my turn to cross over. I’ll shake her sweet paw and sniff that spot between her eyes.

Thank you for listening.

🐛 Okay everybody, here's my finished mini Alice in Wonderland! This is the first mini I produced on my own at home and there are SO MANY learnings... where to even begin?

FIRST, I was super nervous to design anything on the leather. I'm a technical person, so the art side of it gives me anxiety. The little doors Alice has to open to chase the rabbit stuck out for me so I made a little keyhole. I don't have any tooling stuff, so I just used thinly pared leather in a gold color to fill it in. I think it turned out okay, but I can't wait to learn tooling on my own. (PSA - tooling is expensive to get into 😬)

SECOND, I need different tapes... mine didn't fray well and left raised marks under the leather. I'm not too upset... it kinda looks cool...like little door hinges!

THIRD, creating leather caps was rough in such a small size... I need to practice, practice!!

FOURTH, feathering leather corners for such a small book was HARD. My blade felt so big on such a small piece of leather... if you have any tips, share below!

Next up: I'll print another copy of the book in a smaller size. The goal is to get this under 3 inches tall (right now, it's 3.5 inches tall). Woot!

Thanks for tuning in to see the outcome! Let me know what you think!
